Dad & Maggie's Trip to the Mountains
August 8 - August 11, 2003

On August 8th, Maggie and I headed for the eastern Sierra to visit the ghost town of Bodie, CA and Mono Lake.

Our adventure took us across the Sierra's at Sonora Pass (over 9,600 feet above sea level). It was about a 6.5 hour drive from Morgan Hill with a short stop for lunch in Twain Harte.

We chose the Best Western Ruby Inn in Bridgeport as our base of operations (they allow dogs). We rose early on Saturday to take pictures of the sun coming up on the Sierra's. After breakfast, we headed for Bodie ("Goodbye, God, I'm going to Bodie"). Thirteen miles off the highway.... three of which are terrible washboard gravel roads.

Loads of history and tons of things to photograph. In the high desert at 8,300 feet, walking uphill is bothersome. We had a great time and saw so much.

On August 9th, we headed for Mono Lake which is near the town of Lee Vining. It's the second oldest lake in the country and is very salty and alkaline. In the late 1800's lumber for Bodie (Bodie is in the high desert.... there are no trees) was milled on the south side of Mono Lake, barged across the lake and then taken by wagon to Bodie.
I've put the photos pretty much into three groups (there's a little crossover). The first group contains pictures near Sonora Pass. The second group is pictures of Bodie and environs. And, the last group has photos of Mono Lake, Bridgeport Lake and the Mono County Courthouse in Bridgeport.

Select a picture group, then click the button at the bottom of the page.

Oh, I almost forgot. The other way you can say it is...."Good, by God, I'm going to Bodie!"

Here's a helpful hint. You can click on any thumbnail photo and see a larger jpeg image in a new window. To close that larger image, just close the window. You'll go back to the thumbnail page. To download any image, just right click on the thumbnail and select "Save Target As".  Have Fun!
